When shared support, structure and accountability matter more than motivation alone.
Why So Many People Struggle When Going It Alone
If you have tried to improve your health on your own and keep finding yourself back at square one, you are not alone. Most people struggle not because they lack willpower, but because sustainable change is hard to maintain without the right support.
Common challenges include lack of accountability, motivation that fades, overwhelm from conflicting advice, feeling isolated, and exhausting cycles of starting and stopping.
Trying to make changes without structured support often means relying heavily on your own motivation and discipline. When life gets busy or stressful, even the most determined people can find this difficult to sustain.
The Psychology of Behaviour Change
Behaviour change is not just about knowing what to do. It is about creating an environment that makes it easier to do the right thing, even when motivation dips.
Research consistently shows that humans are wired for connection and that our habits are shaped by the people and structures around us. Consistency matters far more than intensity, and change feels most achievable when it is supported rather than forced.
This is where structured coaching programmes, particularly group programmes, can make a meaningful difference. They create conditions that help behaviour change stick through shared experience, accountability, and practical guidance.
How Group Programmes Create Accountability
One of the most powerful aspects of group programmes is the accountability they provide.
This is not about judgement or pressure. It is about knowing you are not doing this alone.
Being part of a group means regular check ins, shared milestones, and a sense that others are walking the same path. There is comfort in knowing someone will notice if you quietly drift away, and encouragement when progress feels slow.
For many people, this kind of accountability is the missing piece when it comes to weight loss and lasting behaviour change.
Why Motivation Often Lasts Longer in a Group Setting
Motivation can be a great starting point, but it is not always reliable long term. What keeps people going is momentum, and this is something a group naturally creates.
In a group setting, you benefit from shared encouragement, seeing others make progress, and the normalising of setbacks. When one person is struggling, someone else is moving forward, and that collective energy helps carry the group as a whole.
This balance helps people stay engaged even on weeks when their own motivation is low.
Learning Through Shared Experience
There is something deeply reassuring about realising you are not the only one finding things difficult.
Group wellbeing programmes create a space where participants can hear different perspectives, learn from each other’s experiences, and feel less alone in their challenges.
This shared experience normalises issues such as cravings, emotional eating, poor sleep, low energy, or stress.
Seeing others make progress builds confidence, while shared learning helps people feel supported rather than judged.
Why Community Matters for Health
Social connection is a powerful predictor of wellbeing. Feeling supported by others reduces shame, increases confidence, and reinforces the idea that health is not something you have to navigate on your own.
Community does not replace professional guidance, but it enhances it. When people feel safe, understood, and connected, they are far more likely to stay consistent and engaged.
Structure Often Matters More Than Willpower
One of the biggest advantages of group programmes is the structure they provide.
Instead of relying on willpower alone, you are supported by clear timelines, step by step guidance, realistic expectations, and the removal of guesswork. This structure helps reduce decision fatigue and the overwhelm caused by conflicting advice.
Health coaching works best when change happens at a sustainable pace. Group programmes are designed to support gradual habit building rather than extreme or short term approaches.
Medical and Coaching Guidance in Group Programmes
Not all group programmes are the same. It is important to choose one that offers evidence based advice, appropriate medical insight, and safe, realistic guidance.
As a GP and Health Coach, my group programmes combine medical expertise with behaviour change coaching. This means guidance is rooted in lifestyle medicine and psychology, not trends or extreme approaches.
The focus is always on sustainable change that fits into real life.
My Group Programme Approach
My 8 week group wellness coaching programme is designed to be supportive, practical, and non judgemental.
Each group includes 6 to 8 participants. This keeps the group small enough for meaningful interaction while still creating a strong sense of community.
Sessions run weekly online for 60 to 75 minutes and provide structure, accountability, and practical tools. You will also be part of a dedicated WhatsApp group for your cohort, where you can share wins, ask questions, and stay motivated. I am in the group too and aim to respond within 48 hours, often much sooner.
Before starting, you will have a complimentary 20 to 30 minute session to discuss your goals, and you will complete a short health questionnaire so I can tailor support appropriately.
The programme covers topics such as managing cravings and emotional eating, improving sleep and energy, reducing stress, building sustainable habits, understanding ultra processed foods, and creating long term behaviour change.
This is not just a course. It is a supportive partnership designed to help you succeed.
Who Group Programmes Are Best Suited For
Group programmes work particularly well if you feel stuck trying to make changes alone, need accountability to stay consistent, feel overwhelmed by conflicting health advice, want sustainable change rather than quick fixes, or value shared support and community.
If any of this resonates, a group programme may be a good fit for you.
One to One Coaching vs Group Programmes: Which Is Right for You?
There is no single right answer. Both one to one coaching and group programmes can be highly effective. The best choice depends on how you work best and the level of support you want.
One to one coaching offers a high level of personalisation, regular direct contact, and tailored accountability. Clients are supported closely with individual guidance, ongoing communication, and personalised strategies. You are not doing it alone. You have a dedicated health coach helping you stay motivated, accountable, and supported through challenges.
Group programmes offer something different rather than less. They provide shared accountability, structure, and the motivation that comes from moving forward with others. Many people thrive in a group environment where camaraderie, shared experiences, and collective momentum help keep progress going. Participants often support one another, share resources, and build connections that last beyond the programme itself.
Group programmes are also designed to be more accessible and affordable, making expert led support available to more people. While the coaching is less individually focused than one to one sessions, it still offers meaningful guidance, accountability, and professional support within a structured framework.
Both approaches have real value. One to one coaching suits those who want highly personalised, ongoing individual support. Group programmes suit those who value community, shared learning, and collective motivation. The key is choosing what best supports you right now.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to share personal details in the group?
You share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. The group is a supportive space, but there is no pressure to disclose anything you would prefer to keep private.
What if I fall behind the group?
Life happens. If you miss a session or feel behind, we can catch up. The WhatsApp group helps you stay connected even if you have a busy week.
Are group programmes suitable for beginners?
Yes. The programme meets people where they are, whether you are just starting out or have tried other approaches before.
How big are the groups?
Each group includes between 6 and 8 participants. This balance allows for meaningful interaction and personalised support within a group setting.
Is group coaching as effective as one to one?
Both can be very effective. One to one coaching offers deeper personalisation, while group coaching provides community, shared accountability, and often better value. Many people find the group dynamic enhances progress because they feel less alone and learn from others.
